Smartphones get smart about water

Imagine using your smartphone to test the safety of water.

That's the goal of researchers at McMaster's Biointerfaces Institute who are developing a mobile app that can quickly determine the level of pollution in a sample of water.

The app works in conjunction with inexpensive pills — also developed at the university — that test for E. coli, heavy metals and pesticides. The pills cause water to change colour if the contaminant is present.
